Discovery of a Small Molecule Insulin Mimetic with Antidiabetic
Activity in Mice,
Bei Zhang, 16 other names, and David E. Moller,
Science May 7 1999: 974-977 (no Medline abstract available yet).
The authors report that a small molecule (a
nonpeptydl fungal metabolite)
can act as an insulin mimetic in several biochemical and cellular assays,
and in two mouse models of diabetes. In the latter models, they do not report
any
evidence of serious side effects of therapeutic levels of the molecule
over treatment times of up to 15 days.
